Rotational dynamics with rolling constraints

The Friction That Refuses to Slow You Down

Rolling without slipping is one of the most-tested — and most-misjudged — mechanics setups in JEE Main & Advanced.

A uniform solid cylinder is released on a ramp inclined at angle θ. It rolls without slipping. What is its linear acceleration — and which way does friction point, and does it do work?

The intuitive guess

"Friction opposes motion, so it points up the incline and slows the cylinder down — and friction always dissipates energy, so it must be doing negative work on the cylinder." Both halves are wrong, and that’s the lesson.
